Report Back: Vaal Kota Festival – Emerald Resort & Casino

I also attended the Vaal Kota Festival at Emerald Resort & Casino yesterday. The festival was a celebration of kota culture, food, music and community, bringing together local vendors, food lovers and entertainment for a full day of activities.

What stood out for me was how the festival managed to take something that is such a big part of township food culture and turn it into a larger entertainment and lifestyle experience. There were different kota offerings and vendors, while the entertainment side of the event also played a big role in creating the atmosphere.

The festival had a strong entertainment lineup, with artists including Amanda Black, Ringo Madlingozi, Vusi Nova, DJ Maphorisa, Mawhoo, Oscar MBO, KO, Blxckie, Mlindo The Vocalist and Toss, among others. The variety of artists also brought different audiences together and added to the overall experience of the festival.

From a media perspective, I found the event interesting because there were several different stories that could be explored beyond the entertainment itself. The festival provided a platform for local food vendors and small businesses, while also celebrating a food that has become an important part of South African township culture.

I also found the community aspect of the festival interesting. It brought people together through food, music and entertainment, while giving vendors and entrepreneurs an opportunity to showcase their businesses and connect with a wider audience. The Kota Festival’s broader focus is also on creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs and supporting small businesses.

Overall, I enjoyed attending the festival and found it valuable from a media perspective. It gave me an opportunity to experience the event first-hand, engage with the atmosphere and identify different possible story angles around food culture, local entrepreneurship, entertainment and community.

Thank you for the opportunity to attend and cover the event.
